First Canberra Cocoaheads

October 17, 2010

There are quite a few people in Canberra interested in developing applications and content for iPhones, iPads, iPods etc. We’ve had a few casual get-togethers in the past and I’m thinking about making it a regular thing. You may or may not have heard of ‘Cocoaheads‘ before. It is an international club of people interested in Cocoa (the main application development framework used on Mac OS X and iOS). I’d been thinking about forming a local chapter of Cocoaheads in Canberra, but was a little concerned that it may be too narrow for the wide range of interests of Canberran iOS designers/developers. Cocoa is just one way to develop for iOS. There’s also web applications, a variety of C/C++ libraries and now that Apple’s relaxed their guidelines, a range of other ways to develop for the platform.

But rather than re-invent the wheel (or club in this case), I thought we could create a Canberra Cocoaheads with the understanding that we’ll almost certainly talk about more than just Cocoa. So, if you’re at all interested in developing for iOS (whether you’re a designer, a developer, someone with an interest in human/computer interaction or someone with an idea about an application for the iOS) then please come along to the first Canberra Cocoaheads.

The first meeting is this Thursday, 21st October.

Edgar’s Inn
1 Edgar St
Ainslie (Ainslie shops)

6:00 PM

If enough people are interested, we could make this a regular monthly thing and perhaps have speakers from time to time, but for this first Cocoaheads I thought we’d keep it pretty casual and just catch up for a drink or two. If you’d like to come please feel free to let me know via a comment below.

  1. [note to self because I’m sure to forget]

5 people have said they’ll come so far.

  2. I’m very new to Obj-C and iOS but keen. I will try to make it on Thursday.

Should we bring laptops etc, or is this meeting more social?

    Cheers

  3. Dave,

Newcomers are most welcome. I hope you can make it. Feel free to bring your laptop – I imagine others will have some code/example apps etc too. But I do expect this first meeting to be less formal and more social.

    Cheers,

    Jake

[that makes it 6 so far]

Mind if I pop in for a look? Want to touch base with dev. community to keep tabs on what’s happening.

I write for Canberra Times. Understood if you’d prefer a closed shop.

    Cheers,
    Myles

  6. Myles, Cocoaheads is open to anyone who has an interest in developing apps for iOS and Mac OS, so you’re most welcome to come. Of course, not everyone who attends will be happy to talk ‘on the record’ about their work so just make it clear who you are when you talk to people and let them decide how much they want to share about what they’re working on.

    See you there,

    Jake

  7. Alas I got caught up with work and can’t make it tonight. But I’ll def aim for the next one.
